Focus on the Family Action Declines To Respond

Over the weekend, I wrote about an online video candidate guide for Christian voters that incorrectly described Mitt Romney’s religious beliefs. The guide, which is distributed by Focus on the Family Action, the political arm of James Dobson’s organization, said that Romney had acknowledged that Mormonism is not a Christian faith. In fact, Romney has acknowledged no such thing.

Today, I got a statement on behalf Tom Minnery, a policy expert at Focus who created the guide. Gary Schneeberger, a spokesman for Focus on the Family Action, wrote me the following:

Tom made his views and the reasons for them clear in the AP story. We’ve finished our analysis of the primaries and caucuses that have already occurred. Like the candidates, our attention is now on the Florida primary — and our next live webast at 10 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Which is to say, Minnery is not going to respond to the fact that his guide is wrong. We will have to wait until his Tuesday webcast to see if he addresses the issue. The other author of the voter guide, Tony Perkins, of the Family Research Council, was asked about the guide on Friday, during an interview with MSNBC. Perkins noted that it was a claim made by Minnery, not himself. Perkins said he was not certain of the source.

In the meantime, as of Monday afternoon, Focus on the Family Action continues to run the incorrect guide on its website.
