I, too, have wondered why Romney hasn’t run on the executive qualities that had brought him to national prominence in the first place. In my own experience covering this candidate, it has seemed that he is most engaging and authentic when he talks about problem-solving, not social issues. Maybe solutions are not a formula for winning a Republican primary. But maybe Romney, with his background and his record, was uniquely positioned to rewrite the formula. In recent days, some of his top advisers have told me that Romney’s campaign has been a missed opportunity. Michigan may give him a do-over–or maybe not.
