Interesting, But Wrong

David Broder has a column today in which he predicts Mike Huckabee is going to try to run a Pat Buchanan type right-wing populist campaign in New Hampshire. Basic problem with that is this: New Hampshire is a changed state, demographically, since Buchanan discovered his inner blue-collar in a meeting with about to be unemployed paper-workers in 1991. The old industries are gone; there’s a thriving high-tech sector, plus more and more Boston suburbanites…also, it’s now a baby blue state, heading toward a deeper hue. Huckabee’s an interesting candidate, but my guess is that his (vice) presidential hopes rest in Iowa, then skipping New Hampshire, and moving on directly to South Carolina.
