In the old way of doing things, people who were thinking seriously about running for President–from FDR, to JFK, to Paul Tsongas–kept their health problems secret. But these days, candidates know that bad news rarely stays secret, and that it’s best to get it out themselves. That’s why everyone I’ve talked to in Republican circles is taking one message away from Fred Thompson’s announcement on FOX this morning that he was diagnosed in 2004 with indolent lymphoma: He’s running.

His not-yet-a-campaign is putting out a statement from his doctor shortly.
