Husband just asked me what I think of the Edwards’ decision. I don’t know anyone who is not a member of that family can speak to the actual wisdom or merits of their choice (is there anything more personal?) but I can say what I felt when I heard the news: It felt right to me. It sounded true to both John’s and Elizabeth’s beliefs. And I have no doubt at all that continuing the campaign was both Elizabeth’s idea and her desire. (As I wrote earlier today, she’s nothing if not genuine.)
Of course, people will inevitably judge and there will be inevitable political repercussions whose form will be as unpredictable as this race has been unprecedented. For now, I wish the Edwards’ only the best of luck and grace in the fight ahead of them.
